Choosing coverage
Most properties start with unarmed security guards or mobile patrol. A standing guard fits sites that need constant presence; patrols fit sites that need regular checks at lower cost. Armed security guards are for cash, high-value inventory, regulated businesses or credible threats.
Add fire watch when sprinklers or alarms are impaired, remote video monitoring for large or after-hours sites, and parking enforcement for communities and lots. Our guide to types of security guard services and security cost guide explain each option.
California requirements
Under Business and Professions Code §7582.1, a private patrol operator is a company that, for pay, furnishes guards or patrol personnel to protect persons or property or to prevent theft or loss. California requires every such company to be licensed by the Bureau of Security and Investigative Services (BSIS).
Every officer must hold a BSIS Guard Card and work for a licensed private patrol operator. The Guard Card requires a DOJ and FBI background check, 8 hours of Power to Arrest and Appropriate Use of Force training before registration, 32 more hours within six months, and 8 hours of continuing training every year. Armed officers also need a BSIS Firearm Permit, and officers carrying a baton or exposed firearm must wear a uniform with “private security” patches (B&P §7582.26–7582.27).
Most California employers must also maintain a written Workplace Violence Prevention Plan under SB 553 (Labor Code 6401.9). Verify any company or officer on the state’s DCA License Search.
