Quick answer
What do security guards do at airports?
Passenger screening at commercial airports is performed by TSA. Contract security officers typically protect parking structures, curbside and landside traffic, terminal public areas and tenant facilities such as cargo buildings and hangars. Every commercial airport operates under a written, TSA-approved airport security program (49 CFR 1542), and unescorted access to a Security Identification Display Area (SIDA) requires a fingerprint-based criminal history check and SIDA training. Safeguard On Demand staffs airport and aviation-tenant posts within those rules.
Key facts
- TSA performs passenger screening
- Airports run TSA-approved security programs

Choosing coverage
Which airport posts need officers?
Most contract airport security work is landside: parking structures, curbside traffic, rental car areas and terminal public spaces. Aviation tenants — cargo operators, FBOs and hangars — often need access-control officers and after-hours patrol.
Federal requirements
Airport security programs and SIDA badges
No one may operate an airport covered by 49 CFR Part 1542 without a written, TSA-approved airport security program, which the airport operator controls (49 CFR 1542.101). Unescorted access to a Security Identification Display Area requires a fingerprint-based criminal history records check and SIDA training (49 CFR 1542.205, 1542.209). Contract officers work within the operator’s program and badge rules.
Every officer must hold a BSIS Guard Card and work for a licensed private patrol operator — 8 hours of Power to Arrest and Appropriate Use of Force training before registration, 32 more hours within six months, and 8 hours of continuing training every year. Verify any company or officer on the state’s DCA License Search.
