Local security challenges
From the San Fernando Valley to the South Bay and the San Gabriel Valley, Los Angeles County is the largest and busiest security market in California — 88 cities, the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach, dense apartment communities, film and production sites, hospitals and some of the state’s busiest retail corridors.
Apartment garages, office lots and dealerships across the county see steady vehicle break-ins and converter theft overnight.
Shopping centers and stand-alone retailers along major corridors deal with repeat shoplifting and smash-and-grabs.
Vacant lots, construction sites and building perimeters need regular checks and documented, lawful responses.

California requirements
Every security officer working in Los Angeles County must hold a BSIS Guard Card and work for a licensed private patrol operator. The Guard Card requires a DOJ and FBI background check, 8 hours of Power to Arrest and Appropriate Use of Force training before registration, 32 more hours within six months, and 8 hours of continuing training every year. Armed officers also need a BSIS Firearm Permit.
Most California employers must also maintain a written Workplace Violence Prevention Plan under SB 553 (Labor Code 6401.9). Security procedures are often part of that plan. Verify any company or officer on the state’s DCA License Search.
