Quick answer

How do you protect a solar farm from theft?

Solar farms lose most to copper and cable theft, especially during construction before permanent monitoring is commissioned. Effective protection combines monitored camera towers, perimeter patrols and, at high-risk phases, on-site officers. California treats copper theft over $950 as grand theft (Penal Code §487j) and requires scrap dealers to photograph and fingerprint sellers of copper (B&P §21608.5).

Key facts

The challenge

Big perimeters, valuable copper

Solar sites are remote, large and full of valuable materials.

Remote locations

Central Valley and desert sites with long police response times.

Cable theft during construction

Copper and cable stolen before monitoring is live.

Huge fenced perimeters

Night intrusion across miles of fence.

Who we protect

Renewable energy sites we protect

On a solar site, the first copper theft usually happens before the fence is finished. That is when we start.

Choosing coverage

Towers, patrols or officers?

Most solar sites are best protected with solar camera towers and live monitoring, backed by perimeter patrols. During high-risk construction phases — cable pulls and inverter delivery — add an on-site officer. See also construction site security.

California requirements

California copper theft laws

Theft of copper materials valued over $950 is grand theft (Penal Code §487j). Scrap dealers may not pay for copper without photographing the seller and material, copying ID, taking a thumbprint, keeping records for two years and delaying payment (Business & Professions Code §21608.5). Penal Code §591 also covers malicious damage to electrical lines.

Every officer must hold a BSIS Guard Card and work for a licensed private patrol operator — 8 hours of Power to Arrest and Appropriate Use of Force training before registration, 32 more hours within six months, and 8 hours of continuing training every year. Verify any company or officer on the state’s DCA License Search.
