Quick answer
Private security services are protection services provided by a licensed private company rather than public law enforcement — security officers, patrols, executive protection, event staff and video monitoring paid for by a business, association or individual. In California, any company that furnishes guards to protect persons or property must be licensed by BSIS as a private patrol operator. Safeguard On Demand is a licensed private patrol operator serving clients across California.
When to hire private security
Police respond to crimes; private security prevents them and protects what you care about day to day.
Retail, offices and industrial sites need a consistent presence that police cannot provide.
Gated communities, estates and high-profile residents need discreet, dependable protection.
Private events, productions and venues need trained staff for entry, crowds and incidents.

Choosing coverage
Uniformed officers deter crime simply by being seen, which suits businesses, communities and public-facing sites. Low-profile or plainclothes protection suits private residences, executives and events where a uniform would draw unwanted attention.
We can combine both — for example mobile patrol outside and a discreet officer inside. See executive protection, private estate security, unarmed security guards and armed security guards.
California requirements
California defines a private patrol operator as a company that, for pay, furnishes guards or patrol personnel to protect persons or property or prevent theft or loss (B&P §7582.1). Only licensed private patrol operators may provide these services.
Every officer must hold a BSIS Guard Card and work for a licensed private patrol operator. The Guard Card requires a DOJ and FBI background check, 8 hours of Power to Arrest and Appropriate Use of Force training before registration, 32 more hours within six months, and 8 hours of continuing training every year.
A BSIS Firearm Permit authorizes an exposed firearm only, worn with a compliant uniform (B&P §7582.26). Armed plainclothes protection also requires a concealed carry license issued by a county sheriff or police chief. Verify any company or officer on the state’s DCA License Search.
