Quick answer
What does event security include?
Event security protects guests, staff, performers and property at events. It typically includes entry screening (bag checks, ID and ticket or wristband verification), crowd management and capacity control, roving patrols, VIP and backstage access control, parking and perimeter security, and emergency response coordinated with venue staff and police. Under the California Fire Code, larger assembly events also need trained crowd managers. Safeguard On Demand staffs events of every size across California.

Crowd crush and overcapacity
Unmanaged lines, exits and capacity create real safety hazards.
Intoxication and fights
Alcohol and crowds lead to disputes that need fast, calm de-escalation.
Gate-crashing and theft

Staffing
How many security guards does an event need?
There is no single ratio for every event. Staffing depends on attendance, the venue layout and number of entrances, whether alcohol is served, the type of crowd and any history of incidents. Higher-risk events — concerts, nightlife, sporting events — need more officers per guest than a corporate dinner.
As a starting point, plan officers for each entrance and exit, roving coverage inside, VIP or backstage posts, and parking. Our guide on how many security guards an event needs walks through it, and the entertainment venue and sports and tournament pages cover recurring events.
California requirements
California rules that affect event security
Crowd managers: the California Fire Code (Section 403) requires trained crowd managers at many assembly events — indoors when more than 500 people attend, and outdoors at 1,000 or more — with at least two crowd managers plus one for every 250 people. Your local fire authority can set stricter rules, so confirm requirements with the fire marshal when you pull permits.
Licensed officers: Every officer must hold a BSIS Guard Card and work for a licensed private patrol operator. The Guard Card requires a DOJ and FBI background check, 8 hours of Power to Arrest and Appropriate Use of Force training before registration, 32 more hours within six months, and 8 hours of continuing training every year. Armed officers also need a BSIS Firearm Permit.
Verify any company or officer on the state’s DCA License Search.
